Role and Purpose:
The Middle School Theatre Teacher fosters a dynamic and engaging learning environment where students are encouraged to explore the fundamentals of theatre, develop performance skills, and collaborate meaningfully with peers. Through innovative instruction, hands-on experiences, and a nurturing classroom culture, this teacher helps students build confidence, communication
abilities, and an appreciation for the dramatic arts. The role also includes department-level support such as co-directing productions, assisting with school-wide performances and events, and contributing to the continued growth of a vibrant theatre program.
Responsibilities:
• Teach theatre classes for students in grades 5 through 8, providing age-appropriate instruction in acting, improvisation, voice, movement, and theatre history
• Develop and implement a comprehensive, sequential curriculum aligned with the school’s philosophy and objectives
• Direct and/or co-direct middle school theatre productions, including casting, rehearsal planning, and performance coordination
• Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that promotes risk-taking, creativity, and collaboration
• Evaluate student progress through constructive feedback, assessments, and performance opportunities
• Collaborate with Lower and Upper School theatre faculty to ensure vertical alignment and shared resources
• Contribute to the planning and execution of school-wide events and initiatives
• Support technical elements of productions as needed (e.g., costuming, set design, lighting in collaboration with the Technical Theatre Director and Upper School Theatre Teacher)
• Serve as a mentor and role model, encouraging student growth
• Maintain clear communication with parents, colleagues, and administration regarding student progress and departmental needs
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Fine Arts or school administration
A Qualified Candidate Will Possess:
• Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Theatre Education, or a related field required - Master’s degree preferred
• Valid Teaching Certification and/ or successful prior teaching experience to middle school aged students
• Experience directing student productions and managing rehearsal processes
• Knowledge of and passion for theatre arts, including contemporary and classical works
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to a team environment
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Commitment to ongoing professional growth and development
• A genuine enthusiasm for working with students in a creative and energetic community
Other Job Functions:
• Attend all required meetings and perform assigned duties
• Take all reasonably necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
• Serve on committees as assigned
Physical Demands and Environment Factors:
• Able to lift at least 50 pounds
• Able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting and bending, as well as climbing ladders
• Ability to work from heights (grids, catwalks, ladders, scaffolding, and lifts)
• Workdays could include long periods of time either sitting or standing
• Maintain emotional control under stress
