Job Description:
Galena Park High School is located just outside IH-610, east of the City of Houston. GPHS is a large 5A high school with a growing theatre program and strong opportunities for student involvement in performance, technical theatre, leadership, and competition.
The Assistant Theatre Director will work alongside the Head Theatre Director to provide meaningful classroom instruction, support productions, guide student leadership, and help create a program culture rooted in creativity, collaboration, discipline, and excellence.
The ideal candidate is a team-oriented educator who values both performance and technical theatre and is excited to help students develop confidence, artistry, responsibility, and a strong sense of ensemble.
Instruction and Student Learning
The Assistant Theatre Director will support high-quality theatre instruction aligned with Texas TEKS and district expectations. Responsibilities may include teaching Theatre Arts, Technical Theatre, or other assigned theatre courses while helping students build skills in acting, directing, design, theatre history, collaboration, and performance.
This position will also help foster student leadership, ensemble building, and classroom routines that support creativity, accountability, and student growth.
Production Support
The Assistant Theatre Director will assist with the planning, rehearsal, technical preparation, and execution of multiple theatrical productions throughout the school year. Responsibilities may include supporting auditions, rehearsals, design and technical elements, performances, and student crews.
This role requires collaboration with the Head Theatre Director, campus staff, district fine arts personnel, students, and families to help create organized, safe, and high-quality theatrical experiences.
The Assistant Theatre Director will also help maintain safe and effective theatre spaces, support production procedures, and contribute to the overall organization of the theatre department.

Required Qualifications
Valid Texas teaching certification with appropriate Theatre endorsement
Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Theatre Education
Experience working on theatrical productions
Strong classroom management and organizational skills
Ability to collaborate closely with a Head Director and contribute to a shared program vision
Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends for productions, rehearsals, contests, and events
Preferred Qualifications
High school theatre teaching or directing experience
Experience with UIL One-Act Play and/or Texas Thespians
Technical theatre knowledge, including scenic, lighting, sound, costumes, stage management, or properties
Experience supporting student leadership, recruitment, and program growth
Strong communication skills and a willingness to contribute to all areas of the theatre program
